On the Election

In New York, the subway is deathly silent; the streets are silent.  There is the occasional person bursting into tears, but otherwise, silent.  I have never seen my city so stunned.  And yet, a map of red tells me that others, elsewhere, are cheering.

This may not have been the revolution we had hoped for, but it is a revolution.

I'm originally from a factory town in Upstate New York.  It's no longer a factory town.  There are no jobs and many Trump supporters.  Some of them do spread hate, but many of them just want a home, a way to provide for their families, a decent life.  I don't believe the new administration will give that to them, but I think they do.  And politicians, as they know them, haven't helped them and I believe that's true, too.

As artists, what is our role in all this?  I think it's to examine compassionately and expose fervently.  One thing is for certain, from adversity comes great art.  Create.  Create.  Create.
