Reflections on the Past Year

The Jewish New Year starts on Sunday night and I thought it would be a good opportunity to step back and take stock of my writing life over the last year.  So often, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the intense nature of creative work, especially when the rest of life constantly nudges you to deal with it.  That intensity is necessary, I've found, but reflection keeps it all in balance.

I'm looking over this last year from a place of gratitude.  I've had an amazing experience working closely with my agent Michelle Brower to revise and ready my novel THE ORIGIN OF WONDER for the world, and I'm hopeful that it will be received well.  This summer, I attended the Tin House Writer's Workshop where I had the terrific luck of landing in a workshop with 11 other outstanding writers and a workshop leader, Dana Spiotta, who taught me so much.  In particular, I was struck by the earnestness and supportive attitudes of everyone I encountered there.

Nimrod International Journal selected one of my stories for publication-- that's always nice.  In addition, the process of working with the editor was one of the best experiences I've had with a journal and I'm proud that my story is included alongside other such high-caliber work.  And, back in Brooklyn, my writing group has just reached it's year anniversary and again I am humbled and inspired by the work and insights of my fellow writers.

Looking forward to deepening those connections and more hard work in the year to come.
